Maiolica Pharmacy Jar
19th C.
A tin-glazed earthenware apothecary jar of waisted cylindrical form with a flared rim and footed base. The body is decorated with vibrant polychrome scalloped bands in deep yellow, olive green, and manganese, framed by cobalt-blue linework. The central cartouche bears the pharmaceutical inscription “CANIS” in Gothic-style lettering, likely referencing an herbal preparation or ingredient used in historic medicinal practice. Glaze with expected craquelure, small losses, and wear consistent with age and use. A bold, graphic example of 19th-century Italian apothecary maiolica, notable for its strong color and traditional form.
