Wrought Iron and Brass Candle Borer on Later Stand
Early 18th C.
Likely previously wall mounted these devices were used to bore holes into the middles of circular candles before they were mounted on spikes. Without a hole, increasing in diameter as the boring continued the candle would split in two and be unusable. Pikes atop candlesticks almost always had a tapered shape, this fine example later mounted on a wooden base
