Italian Rococo Period
Walnut and Inlaid 3-Drawer Serpentine Shaped Commode
Mid-18th C.
An elegant three-drawer Italian commode of serpentine form, crafted in richly figured walnut. The case features a softly undulating, bombé façade with shaped sides, over a molded top and a scalloped apron, all raised on graceful, slightly splayed legs. The drawers retain finely cast brass pulls and escutcheons in a restrained rocaille form, the surface shows a warm, naturally oxidized patina consistent with age and use, enhancing the depth of the wood. Likely Northern Italian, circa 1750, this is a beautifully proportioned and eminently usable example of late Baroque into early Rococo Italian case furniture.
