Carrara Marble Bust of a Moor
Late 18th C.
A finely carved marble bust depicting a Moorish figure in the manner of classical Roman portraiture. The subject is presented with stylized coiffure and serene expression, draped in a toga that falls in soft folds across the shoulders. The bust is mounted on a turned marble socle, both carved from the same stone but made in two separate pieces. The surface exhibits natural patination and wear, lending an appealing, authentic aged character.
The restrained modeling and balanced composition reflect the Neoclassical revival’s fascination with antiquity and the idealized human form. This piece may have served originally as a garden or interior ornament in a grand house or villa.
