Italian Louis Philippe Period
Pair of Walnut and Ebonized 3-Drawer Commodes
ca. 1835-1840
The Louis Philippe style extends a certain classicism inherited from the Restauration style concerning its restrained lines, the furniture becomes however more stately. The chest of drawers with straight lines and with curved molding on the upper drawer is a wonderful example of Louis Philippe style while the Italians always add a particular decorative response of their own throughout all of the periods in history. On this pair, the ebonized and carved paw feet are indicative of the area from which these were crafted, most likely Naples.
