the importance of these monastic chairs is the carving, important enough to the maker to have placed them within chair frames built in the 19th century, the 17th century panels are carved with a variation of IHS, a monogram symbolizing Jesus Christ, and have circular and "maze-like" carvings as well, the IHS symbol is a common abbreviation for Jesuit monks furthering the notion that these chairs were used in a church context, the sliding doors underneath were used to hold bibles and liturgical books and woud have been placed in a meeting room where daily prayers were read
